Rewiring Recurring Payments
Fintech
2023
Summary / Opportunity
BillFixer, our tool for canceling and negotiating bills, was disconnected from where users actually managed their recurring payments. This friction made it harder to find, harder to use, and broke the logic of the experience.
My Role
As design lead, I bridged the gap between user behavior and product architecture. I worked closely with product, engineering, and data to reposition BillFixer within the Money section, reshaping the experience around how people manage their finances.
Challenges + Pivots
The toughest challenge was changing internal assumptions. BillFixer had been treated as a standalone feature, but for users, it was part of a bigger system. After testing different entry points and user flows, we made a clear call: BillFixer belonged inside Recurring Payments. This required redesigning the dashboard, embedding cancellation and negotiation flows, and creating a direct widget within the Money overview.
Outcome / Impact
Created a more cohesive and actionable experience by integrating BillFixer directly into Recurring Payments
Enabled users to view and manage all recurring charges in one place, improving clarity and decision-making
Designed a new Recurring Payments structure that significantly enhanced user satisfaction
Achieved a 92% positive user response rate following the redesign
Unlocked new opportunities for insight-driven features and a more connected financial ecosystem
Output
We introduced provider-level pages with full transaction history, linked payment methods, bill categories, and built-in actions like cancel, negotiate, or boost. This pattern was then applied to credit and debit card detail pages, with plans to scale across categories and merchants. We drew inspiration from holistic money management apps like Truebill and Monarch.
What I Learned
Structure matters. Features like BillFixer don’t need more promotion, they need better placement. By embedding tools where users already think and act, we create clarity and momentum. This project sharpened my focus on aligning architecture with mental models to drive meaningful engagement.
