Scaling Collaboration in a Remote World
Productivity
2020
The Opportunity
When the pandemic shifted everyone to remote work overnight, teams needed new ways to align quickly, make decisions, and push products forward—without being in the same room. We saw an opportunity to reimagine workshops as digital-first, strategic tools for product discovery and rapid design alignment.
“Remote didn’t mean disconnected. We built a system where collaboration thrived, virtually.”
My Role
I led the creation and rollout of a suite of virtual UX workshop offerings, from strategy to design to final execution. I partnered closely with product leads, UX researchers, and engineers to craft scalable, repeatable experiences tailored for remote teams. I also defined the visual structure, UX flows, agendas, and toolkits for each workshop.
The Challenges
Facilitating co-creation and alignment remotely was uncharted territory. We had to rethink how teams brainstorm, make trade-offs, and test assumptions without post-its or whiteboards. Our biggest pivot was creating interactive, guided templates using Mural, Zoom, and Google Slides that mimicked in-person dynamics while adding clarity and focus.
“We traded stickies for structure, and got even better outcomes.”
What We Built
We developed a robust modular design system grounded in Atomic Design principles — 266 components, 4 templates, 39 pages — to enable consistency and scalability. Three concept directions were explored, and the winning one brought a bold yet clean energy with geometric shapes and playful hierarchy, redefining the company’s digital presence. Alongside, we rearchitected the sitemap and content structure, setting the foundation for stronger SEO and smoother journeys.
The Impact
The virtual workshops became a core product delivery engine. Teams reported faster alignment, more efficient decision-making, and better engagement across time zones. The Design Sprint and Design Discovery tracks were adopted across departments, with several MVPs launched off the back of these sessions.
Reduced kickoff times by 40%
Supported cross-functional teams in 4+ time zones
Standardized templates reused in over 25 projects
Output
We shipped three workshop experiences:
Virtual Design Discovery: A tool for exploring user needs and defining product direction remotely.
Virtual Design Sprint: A 5-day rapid MVP-building format with clear outcomes and test plans.
Remote Toolkit: A curated set of collaborative tools and templates that empowered teams to move fast and stay aligned.
Each was supported with branded visuals, downloadable decks, and custom illustrations to drive clarity and energy.
What I Learned
Remote work isn’t a limitation—it’s a design challenge. This project reshaped how I think about facilitation, team energy, and the power of structure. I now approach every collaborative process as something that can—and should—be productized for scale and impact.
